CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE
Damon
They hadnât spoken since Damon left Enzoâs house on Wednesday. Heâd felt like he was drowning the whole time, like heâd begun to dig his way out of the dark pit heâd lived in since Katieâs death, only to be knocked back down into it again.
The logical part of him knew that one person shouldnât have that much control over him. It was okay to be hurt and to care about someone, but Enzo couldnât be his reason to enjoy sunshine again. But Christ, something about him was so damn freeing for Damon. It was like heâd had the key to chains Damon hadnât known heâd been in. Being with Enzo felt reckless in a way Damon had never allowed himself. It was right between the two of them, he was right with Enzo, and for someone who had never had that kind of outlook in regards to anything in his life, it was shocking.
See? You donât have to be so serious all the time, big bro.
He smiled when he thought about Katie. She would have loved it, loved seeing Damon put his heart ahead of his brain.
But then, that was why he was hurt, wasnât it? Because heâd leaped without thinking.
Damon went into the bathroom and looked at himself in the mirror. He looked a bit of a mess, like he was a walking advertisement for sad and lonely. Heâd always been a little sad⦠always been a little lonely. That feeling was amplified when he lost Katie and pushed into the background when he met Enzo, and now swollen again without Enzo.
He was tired⦠so fucking tired of feeling that way. He hadnât realized the amount of pressure that had released from inside him since meeting Enzo, and Damon didnât want to lose that now. He couldnât lose it.
He should maybe do something about itâ¦
But first, first he had to get ready for the party when all he wanted to do was lie in bed and feel sorry for himself.
Damon undressed, then ran the electric razor over his head again. He got into the shower and let the water run over his face and beat against the muscles that had been tight for over a year.
When he finished, he dried off, wrapped a towel around his waist, and brushed his teeth. He slipped his glasses on before going to his closet and reached for a polo before stopping.
Instead he plucked a light-blue button-up shirt with short sleeves from the hanger. It still had a collar, but damn it, he liked collared shirts.
Damon paired it with a nice pair of jeans and his black Chukka boots.
Once he was ready, Damon headed for the door. He paused, leaned his forehead against it, and took a few deep breaths. He could do this. He could be social. He could go out. It was only a restaurant⦠though it felt different than the Italian place or burger joints he went to with Enzo. It was more upscale⦠the environment, and the drinking would almost be like⦠No.
